Eagles Sport Top-Ranked Special Teams in NFC East

David Elfinby David ElfinOnly one kicker has ever been named the NFL's Most Valuable Player, Washington's Mark Moseley in 1982. The first coach to hire a fulltime assistant to coach special teams, George Allen, earned his greatest success with the Redskins, including the signing of Moseley, in 1974. Allen's first special teams coach, Dick Vermeil, turned the moribund Philadelphia Eagles into a playoff team in his second season and a Super Bowl contestant in his fourth. The most prolific return man in NFL history, Brian Mitchell, played his entire 14-year career in the NFC East with the Redskins, Eagles and New York Giants, missing only Dallas. And the NFC East's track record on special teams isn't just history. No NFC division has more seniority among its special teams coaches than Philadelphia's Bobby April (20th season working with the position group), Dallas' Joe DeCamillis (18th) and Washington's Danny Smith (12th). So who has the NFC East's best special teams?

Patrick Crayton Aside, Cowboys Tinkered Very Little With Roster

David Elfinby David ElfinWhy mess with success could be the motto in Big D in 2010. After winning an NFC-best 69 percent of their games during their first three seasons under coach Wade Phillips, the Cowboys have remained about as steady as any team does in today's NFL. While Dallas does have eight rookies, the roster only includes three veterans who've never worn a Dallas uniform: former St. Louis offensive tackle Alex Barron, acquired in May in exchange for linebacker Bobby Carpenter; guard Montrae Holland, signed as a free agent in May; and former Cleveland linebacker Leon Williams, signed in January out of the United Football League.

FanHouse TVby FanHouse TVThe NFL preseason is finally over, but just because the games so far have been meaningless in the standings, doesn't mean that there weren't any winners and losers. David Buehler Risk Paying Big Dividends in Dallas

David Elfinby David ElfinDallas raised eyebrows during the 2009 draft by selecting USC kicker David Buehler in the fifth round. After all, Nick Folk had enjoyed a fine 2008 season kicking for the Cowboys and was just 24. And after not winning a playoff game since 1996, Dallas wasn't so powerful that it could afford to waste a draft pick on a player who wouldn't contribute for years, maybe ever. Why keep two young kickers? Buehler made the team as a kickoff specialist and the Cowboys looked prescient when Folk struggled and was cut in December. Shaun Suisham took over and when he faltered, too, Dallas was so bold as to promote Buehler during the offseason and not even bring a competitor to training camp to challenge him. Thursday night, Buehler rewarded the Cowboys' faith by booting field goals of 40, 45 and 51 yards before hitting a 31-yarder as time expired that beat visiting Miami 27-25 to complete a 3-2 preseason for Dallas. "I really would have played this game, would have staged it, put the air conditioning on, opened the door to create those circumstances for Buehler to get that opportunity," crowed Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones. "That was worth the ballgame for us to see him step up here and make those kicks. We've got us a kicker."

Cowboys Have NFC East's Best Defense

David Elfinby David ElfinThey have some of the greatest nicknames in NFL history: the Purple People Eaters, the Fearsome Foursome, the Steel Curtain. And so many unforgettable players have played the position: Reggie White, Deacon Jones, Bruce Smith, Warren Sapp, Bob Lilly, Doug Atkins, Buck Buchanan, Ben Davidson, Mean Joe Greene, Gino Marchetti, just to name 10. Of course, I'm talking about the defensive line, a position group that helped win Super Bowls for the 2007 New York Giants (Michael Strahan, Barry Cofield, Fred Robbins and Osi Umenyiroa), the 1987 Washington Redskins (Charles Mann, Dave Butz, Darryl Grant and Dexter Manley) and the 1977 Dallas Cowboys (Too Tall Jones, Jethro Pugh, Randy White and Harvey Martin) and scared the heck out of opposing offenses for the 1988 Philadelphia Eagles (Clyde Simmons, Jerome Brown, Mike Pitts and White). In short, there's a pretty strong tradition of defensive line excellence in the NFC East. So who has the best line in 2010? As was the case at quarterback, running backs, receivers/tight ends and the offensive line, it's the Cowboys.
